Most supplement brands write hooks the way they write everything else — by committee, by guess, by what worked last quarter. The result is a feed full of ads that say the same thing in slightly different fonts.

    Why hooks decide everything

The hook is not the headline. It's the first 1.5 seconds — the frame, the line, the motion that decides whether someone stays. Everything after the hook is wasted impression if the hook fails.

Platform algorithms now optimize for thumb-stop within the first second. Your CPM is downstream of your hold rate, and your hold rate is downstream of the hook. Get the hook wrong and the rest of the ad doesn't matter.

    The 12 patterns

    1. The diagnostic question

"If 3am is when your brain starts its to-do list, this one's for you." It works because it makes the viewer self-identify before they realize they're being sold to.

    2. The category callout

"Read the back of your collagen tub. Then read ours." Authority by negation. You're not selling — you're warning.

    3. The visible transformation

A before/after that doesn't look staged. UGC-coded, studio-shot. Bonus points if the timeline is shown on screen.

    4. The expert frame

A doctor, dietician, or PhD on camera in the first second. Trust transfer is instant. FTC-compliant disclosure required.

    5. The wrong assumption

"You don't have a sleep problem. You have a magnesium problem." Reframes the viewer's identity from "broken" to "missing one thing."

    6. The product reveal

Shot of the product opening, pouring, dissolving. Zero people. Works best for brands with strong packaging.

    7. The customer recap

"I bought this because of a TikTok and now I'm telling you the same thing." Recursive UGC. Performs disproportionately well in cold traffic.

    8. The list teaser

"Three signs your iron is low." The list creates a psychological open loop. People stay to close it.

    9. The pattern interrupt

A frame that doesn't belong — a glitch, a hard cut, an unexpected sound. Performance is volatile but the ceiling is high.

    10. The price anchor

"$3 a day vs. $200 a month for the prescription." Reframe the cost as a comparison, not an expense.

    11. The contrarian truth

"Vitamin D won't fix your fatigue. Here's what will." Sets up the brand as the corrective voice in a noisy category.

    12. The native UGC

Filmed vertical, hand-held, in someone's actual kitchen. Indistinguishable from organic.

    How to deploy

Pick three patterns. Build five variants of each. Test for two weeks at minimum. Kill the bottom two patterns and double the winners.

The brands that keep winning aren't smarter — they're running this exact loop continuously. The hooks above are the menu. The discipline is the recipe.
